Understanding the math

The calculator assumes equal end gaps. That means the number of spaces is one more than the number of balusters. It starts with your selected maximum clear spacing, finds the minimum baluster count that keeps the clear spacing within that limit, then recalculates the actual spacing so the layout is even.

Balusters needed  = ceil((span - max spacing) / (baluster width + max spacing))
Spaces             = balusters + 1
Actual clear space = (span - balusters x width) / spaces
Center spacing     = actual clear space + baluster width
First center mark  = actual clear space + baluster width / 2

Example: a 96 in rail span with 1.5 in balusters and a 4 in maximum clear spacing needs ceil((96 - 4) / (1.5 + 4)) = 17 balusters. Actual clear spacing is (96 - 17 x 1.5) / 18 = 3.92 in. Center-to-center spacing is 5.42 in, and the first center mark is 4.67 in from the post.

Measure the clear rail span, choose the baluster width, and set the maximum clear spacing. The calculator increases the baluster count until the actual clear space between balusters is not greater than the selected max spacing, then spreads the end gaps evenly.

How many balusters do I need?

How many balusters per 8 feet?

For an 8 ft rail span with 1.5 in balusters and a 4 in maximum clear spacing, the calculator gives 17 balusters. Different baluster widths or spacing limits can change that count.
