This calculator estimates standard vinyl fence panels, posts, gates, and concrete bags. It does not include slopes, rackable panels, caps, brackets, inserts, specialty hardware, post depth, or frost-depth checks.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Enter the total fence length, height, and vinyl panel width.
  2. 02Enter the number of gates, gate width, and terminal, corner, or end post count.
  3. 03Set concrete bags per post and choose the vinyl fence style.
  4. 04Open the cost section if you want material cost, labor cost, and total estimated cost.
  5. 05Read the panels, line posts, terminal and gate posts, gates, concrete bags, and estimate.

Understanding the math

Vinyl fences are usually planned by panel width. The calculator subtracts gate openings from the fence run, rounds up the panel count, then counts line posts between panels. Terminal, corner, end, and gate posts are added separately. Labor cost uses total fence length because per-foot installation pricing usually follows the full fence line.

Total gate width = gate count x gate width
Adjusted fence run = max(total length - total gate width, 0)
Vinyl panels = adjusted fence run / panel width
Line posts = max(panels - 1, 0)
Terminal/gate posts = terminal posts + gate count x 2
Total posts = line posts + terminal/gate posts
Concrete bags = total posts x bags per post
Labor cost = total fence length x labor rate

Example: a 100 ft vinyl fence with one 4 ft gate has 96 ft of panel run. With 8 ft panels, four terminal, corner, or end posts, and one concrete bag per post, the estimate is 12 panels, 11 line posts, 6 terminal and gate posts, 17 total posts, and 17 concrete bags.

For post depth, frost depth, or concrete volume per post, use the Fence Post Depth Calculator. To compare with wood privacy or spaced picket material, use the Wood Fence Calculator. For a broader fence material takeoff, use the Fence Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate vinyl fence materials?

Subtract gate openings from the fence length, divide the remaining run by panel width, and round up for panels. Line posts are the spaces between panels. Terminal, corner, end, and gate posts are counted separately.

How much does a vinyl fence cost?

Cost depends on panel style, panel price, post price, gates, concrete, and local labor. Enter your material prices and labor rate in the cost section to estimate the project.

How many vinyl fence panels do I need?

Divide the fence run after gate openings by the panel width and round up. A 100 ft fence with one 4 ft gate leaves 96 ft of panel run, so 8 ft panels need 12 panels.

How far apart are vinyl fence posts?

Vinyl fence posts usually follow the panel width. If your panels are 8 ft wide, the line posts are typically spaced about 8 ft apart, before accounting for corners, ends, and gates.

Is vinyl fence cheaper than wood?

Vinyl often costs more upfront than wood, but it does not need stain and may need less maintenance. Wood can be cheaper at purchase, especially for basic privacy fence material.

How many bags of concrete do I need for vinyl fence posts?

Multiply total posts by the bags per post, then round up. The right bags-per-post number depends on hole diameter, depth, post size, and soil.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial / Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference table values, and examples follow the active unit system where applicable. Labor shows per foot in imperial and per meter in metric.
