Air Changes per Hour Calculator
Calculate room air changes per hour from airflow and room volume, or estimate the CFM needed for a target ACH.
Results
ACH is an airflow estimate. Actual ventilation depends on fan performance, duct losses, room layout, and how well the air mixes.
How to use this calculator
- 01Choose ACH from airflow or airflow from ACH.
- 02Enter room dimensions or a known floor area.
- 03Enter ceiling height, then enter airflow or target ACH.
- 04Review ACH, required airflow, room area, room volume, and airflow conversions.
If you already have a room ACH target and only need the airflow, the CFM Calculator uses the same room-volume relationship. If that airflow has to move through ducts, use the Duct Size Calculator after you know the CFM.
Understanding the math
ACH compares airflow against the room volume. A smaller room reaches a higher ACH with the same CFM, while a larger room needs more airflow to hit the same target.
ACH = CFM x 60 / room volume required CFM = room volume x target ACH / 60 air changes per minute = ACH / 60
Metric mode shows airflow in cubic meters per hour and liters per second, with CFM included as a secondary HVAC reference.
ACH quick reference
Use these ranges as planning examples, not code requirements. Ventilation targets vary by room use, occupancy, equipment, and local rules.
| Space | Example volume | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | 2,400 cu ft | 3–6 ACH |
| Bedroom | 1,440 cu ft | 4–6 ACH |
| Office | 1,800 cu ft | 4–8 ACH |
| Bathroom | 720 cu ft | 6–10 ACH |
| Kitchen | 1,600 cu ft | 6–12 ACH |
| Garage / workshop | 4,800 cu ft | 6–10 ACH |
| High-filtration space | 1,200 cu ft | 10–20+ ACH |
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate air changes per hour?
Use ACH = CFM x 60 / room volume in cubic feet. This calculator can also rearrange the formula to find the CFM needed for a target ACH.
What is 20 air changes per hour?
20 ACH means the equivalent of the room's air volume is replaced 20 times per hour, assuming the airflow mixes well in the space.
What is 5 air changes per hour?
5 ACH means the equivalent of the room's air volume is replaced 5 times per hour. In real rooms, mixing and airflow path still matter.
How many air changes per hour for a living room?
Many living rooms use a rough planning range around 3 to 6 ACH, but there is no single universal value. Local code, ventilation design, occupancy, and room use can change the target.
Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?
Yes. Use the Imperial / Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system where applicable.
