This calculator estimates steel plate and sheet material weight only. It does not calculate load capacity, bending strength, freight class, or code requirements. Actual weight can vary by grade and mill tolerance.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose carbon steel, stainless steel, or custom steel density.
  2. 02Enter the plate length and width.
  3. 03Choose a common thickness preset or enter the exact plate thickness.
  4. 04Enter quantity and waste percentage.
  5. 05Open the cost section if you want material cost from price per pound or kilogram.
  6. 06Read weight per plate, total weight, area, weight per square foot or meter, volume, and density used.

Understanding the math

Steel plate weight is volume times density. The calculator multiplies plate length, width, and thickness, applies the selected steel density, multiplies by quantity, then adds waste.

Plate weight = length x width x thickness x density
Plate area = length x width
Total plate area = plate area x quantity
Weight per area = weight per plate / plate area
With waste = total weight x (1 + waste percent / 100)

Example: a 96 in x 48 in x 0.25 in mild steel plate has 1152 in3 of volume and 32 ft2 of area. At 0.283 lb/in3, the plate weighs about 326 lb, or about 10.2 lb/ft2. With 5% waste, the order weight is about 342 lb.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate weight of a steel plate?

Multiply length x width x thickness to get volume, then multiply by steel density.

How to calculate weight of steel plate in pounds?

Use inches for length, width, and thickness, then multiply the volume by density in lb/in3. The result is pounds.

How to calculate mild steel plate weight?

Mild steel is commonly estimated at 0.283 lb/in3 or 7850 kg/m3. Multiply length x width x thickness x density.

What thickness should I use for steel plate weight?

Use the actual plate thickness from the material spec, drawing, or supplier listing. The calculator includes common presets and a custom thickness field.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial / Metric toggle. Inputs, results, examples, and the reference table follow the active unit system where applicable.
