Tile Installation Cost Calculator

Estimate rough installed tile cost for floors, walls, backsplashes, and showers from area, material price, labor rate, waste, removal, prep, and fixed add-ons.

This page is for installed-cost planning. For tile count, grout, and thinset quantities, use the Tile Calculator.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Pick the project type: Floor, Wall, Backsplash, or Shower.
  2. 02Enter rectangle dimensions or switch to Known Area if you already measured the tile area.
  3. 03Enter tile material price, labor rate, and the material waste percentage.
  4. 04Turn on removal or prep add-ons only when they apply, and enter any fixed allowance if needed.
  5. 05Read the installed cost, cost per area, and material and labor breakdown.

For irregular rooms or shower walls, calculate area first with the Square Footage Calculator, then use Known Area here.

Understanding the math

Installed tile cost starts with area. Material waste applies to tile material, while labor, removal, and prep usually use the installed area.

area = length x width
material_area = area x (1 + waste_percent / 100)
tile_material_cost = material_area x tile_price
labor_cost = area x labor_rate
total = tile_material_cost + labor_cost + removal_cost + prep_cost + fixed_cost
cost_per_area = total / area

Final bids can change with substrate condition, waterproofing, demolition, layout complexity, tile size, pattern, trim details, and local labor rates.

Frequently asked questions

How much is tile installation per square foot?

Tile installation cost per square foot depends on the project type, tile size, pattern, substrate condition, prep work, removal, waterproofing, and local labor rates. Simple floors usually cost less per square foot than showers, backsplashes, or detailed wall tile. Use the labor rate field to enter the rate you were quoted or a local planning rate.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Installed tile cost usually includes tile material, labor, material waste, and any removal, prep, waterproofing, or fixed job charges. This calculator totals the rates you enter for a rough planning estimate.

How much does it cost to tile a 36x36 shower?

A 36 x 36 shower cost depends on wall height, how many walls are tiled, waterproofing, tile price, and local labor. A 36 x 36 shower floor alone is 9 sq ft, but full shower walls add much more area.

How do I estimate tile labor cost?

Multiply the installed tile area by the labor rate. Then adjust for project type, pattern complexity, prep, removal, waterproofing, and local job conditions. Labor usually uses installed area, not material area with waste.

What affects tile installation cost?

Tile type, tile size, pattern, project type, substrate prep, removal, waterproofing, room shape, and local labor rates can all change the installed cost.

Is this the same as a tile material calculator?

No. This page estimates installed cost. Use the Tile Calculator for tile count, grout, and thinset material quantities.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial/Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system where applicable.
