Paver Base Calculator

Estimate compacted paver base volume, loose order quantity, weight, bags, allowance, and optional rough cost for patios, walkways, known areas, and round areas.

This page estimates the base layer under pavers. It does not calculate paver count, bedding sand, or joint sand.

Formula Usedarea = length x width; compacted volume = area x base depth; order volume = compacted volume x allowance

This estimates paver base material only. It does not calculate paver count, bedding sand, joint sand, drainage, excavation, or installation labor details.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose rectangle/patio, walkway/strip, known area, or circle/round area mode.
  2. 02Enter the project size and compacted paver base depth.
  3. 03Enter the compaction or waste allowance, material density, and bag size if needed.
  4. 04Open Add cost estimate only if you want rough volume, weight, bag, or delivery cost rows.

Use the Paver Calculator when you need paver count. For bedding or joint sand above the base, use the Paver Sand Calculator. For a separate volume check, use the Cubic Yard Calculator. For broader aggregate takeoffs, use the Gravel Calculator.

Understanding the math

The calculator finds project area, multiplies by compacted base depth, then adds your allowance to estimate loose order volume. Weight comes from order volume times density.

rectangle_or_walkway_area = length x width
round_area = pi x (diameter / 2)^2
known_area = entered project area
compacted_volume = area x base_depth
order_volume = compacted_volume x (1 + allowance_percent / 100)
weight = order_volume x material_density
bags_needed = ceiling(weight / bag_size)
optional_cost = volume_cost + weight_cost + bag_cost + delivery_or_misc_cost

Frequently asked questions

How much paver base do I need calculator?

Use project area times base depth to get compacted volume, then add a compaction or waste allowance for the amount to order.

How to calculate paver base?

Multiply the project area by the base depth. Convert that volume to cubic yards or cubic meters, then add an allowance for compaction, spillage, and uneven subgrade.

How many bags of paver base do I need?

Estimate the total weight of the base material, divide by the bag size, and round up to a whole bag.

How much base should be under pavers?

Many patios and walkways use several inches of compacted base. The right depth depends on soil, drainage, climate, traffic, and local guidance.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial/Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system.
