Paver Sand Calculator

Estimate bedding sand volume, joint or polymeric sand bags, weight, allowance, and optional rough cost for paver patios, walkways, known areas, and round areas.

This page estimates sand for paver installation. It does not calculate paver count or paver base gravel.

Formula Usedarea = length x width; placed volume = area x sand depth; order volume = placed volume x allowance

This estimates paver bedding sand and joint/polymeric sand only. It does not calculate paver count, paver base gravel, excavation, drainage, or installation labor details.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose bedding patio, bedding known area, bedding round area, or joint/polymeric sand mode.
  2. 02Enter the project size or known paver area.
  3. 03For bedding sand, enter sand depth, density, bag size, and allowance.
  4. 04For joint or polymeric sand, enter bag coverage and allowance.
  5. 05Open Add cost estimate only if you want rough material or delivery cost rows.

Use the Paver Calculator for paver count. For the compacted layer below bedding sand, use the Paver Base Calculator. For a separate volume check, use the Cubic Yard Calculator.

Understanding the math

Bedding sand uses area times depth to estimate placed volume, then adds allowance for order quantity. Joint sand uses project area divided by bag coverage.

rectangle_area = length x width
round_area = pi x (diameter / 2)^2
known_area = entered project area
placed_sand_volume = area x sand_depth
order_sand_volume = placed_sand_volume x (1 + allowance_percent / 100)
weight = order_sand_volume x sand_density
bedding_bags = ceiling(weight / bag_size)
joint_bags_before_waste = ceiling(project_area / coverage_per_bag)
joint_bags_needed = ceiling((project_area / coverage_per_bag) x allowance)

Frequently asked questions

How much paver sand do I need?

It depends on the project area, sand type, and depth. Bedding sand is estimated from area and depth, while joint or polymeric sand is usually estimated from the bag's coverage rate. The calculator shows the order volume, weight, and bag count after adding your allowance.

How do I calculate paver sand?

For bedding sand, multiply area by sand depth, then add allowance. For joint sand, divide area by bag coverage and round up.

How many square feet does a 50 lb bag of polymeric sand cover?

Coverage depends on joint width, paver size, and product specs. Use the coverage listed on the bag when available.

How much sand for a 12x12 patio?

A 12 ft by 12 ft patio is 144 sq ft. Multiply that area by the bedding sand depth, then add allowance.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial/Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system.
