This calculator estimates aluminum material weight only. It does not calculate load capacity, tube strength, pressure rating, structural design, or freight cost. Actual weight can vary by alloy, temper, coating, and mill tolerance.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose the aluminum alloy and stock shape.
  2. 02Enter the dimensions for the selected shape.
  3. 03Enter quantity and waste percentage.
  4. 04Open the cost section if you want material cost from price per pound or kilogram.
  5. 05Read weight per piece, total weight, weight with waste, density used, and plate area when applicable.

Understanding the math

Aluminum weight is volume times alloy density. The calculator finds volume from the selected stock shape, applies the aluminum density, multiplies by quantity, then adds waste. Plate and sheet results also show area and weight per square foot or square meter.

Aluminum weight = volume x alloy density
Plate volume = length x width x thickness
Round bar volume = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length
Round tube volume = pi x (OD^2 - ID^2) / 4 x length
Tube volume = (outer area - inner area) x length
With waste = total weight x (1 + waste percent / 100)

Example: a 96 in x 48 in x 0.125 in 6061 aluminum sheet has 576 in3 of volume. At 0.0975 lb/in3, it weighs about 56.2 lb. With 5% waste, the order weight is about 59.0 lb.

For mixed metal takeoffs, use the Metal Weight Calculator. For tube-only weight checks, use the Pipe Weight Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate weight of aluminum?

Find the aluminum volume from the shape dimensions, then multiply by the selected alloy density.

How to calculate aluminum sheet weight?

Use sheet length x width x thickness x aluminum density. Area and thickness are the main inputs for sheet weight.

How to calculate aluminum plate weight?

Calculate the plate volume from length, width, and thickness, then multiply by the alloy density. Add quantity and waste after the per-piece weight is known.

How much does 6061-T6 aluminum weigh?

6061-T6 aluminum is close to 0.0975 lb/in3 or 2700 kg/m3. The final weight depends on the plate, bar, or tube dimensions.

Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?

Yes. Use the Imperial / Metric toggle. Inputs, results, examples, and the reference table follow the active unit system where applicable.
