Baseboard Calculator
Estimate baseboard trim length and board count from room perimeter, wall runs, openings, board length, and waste.
Use this for finish trim takeoffs, not heating equipment sizing or installation pricing.
Results
This calculator estimates baseboard trim length and board count. It does not size heating equipment or estimate material and labor cost.
How to use this calculator
- 01Choose room perimeter, total wall/run length, or multiple equal rooms.
- 02Enter the room dimensions or measured baseboard run in the active unit system.
- 03Subtract doors, openings, or any wall sections that will not receive baseboard.
- 04Set the board or piece length and waste percentage to estimate pieces needed.
If you already have a separate trim run, the Linear Feet Calculator can help check the length. For wall surface area and opening deductions, use the Wall Square Footage Calculator.
Understanding the math
Baseboard is measured as a linear run. The calculator starts with the gross room perimeter or run length, subtracts openings, adds waste, then divides by board length.
room_perimeter = 2 x (room_length + room_width) net_run = gross_run - opening_deduction waste_adjusted_run = net_run x (1 + waste_percent / 100) boards_needed = ceiling(waste_adjusted_run / board_length) multiple_rooms = net_run_per_room x room_count
Baseboard reference table
Use these active-unit examples as a quick check for room perimeter, board count, opening deductions, and waste.
| Example | Result | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft x 12 ft room | 44 linear ft | Before doors and waste |
| 44 linear ft + 10% waste | 5 boards | Using 12 ft boards |
| 3 ft door opening | subtract 3 ft | No baseboard across the doorway |
| Common waste range | 5% to 15% | More cuts need more waste |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much baseboard I need?
Measure the room perimeter or total wall run, subtract door openings or skipped sections, then add waste for cuts.
How much baseboard is needed for a room that is 20 ft long and 30 ft wide?
A 20 ft by 30 ft rectangular room has a perimeter of 100 linear ft before door deductions and waste.
What is the 7% rule for baseboards?
Some installers add about 7% extra for cuts and waste. A 5% to 15% waste range is common depending on room complexity.
How do you account for doors when measuring baseboard?
Subtract the width of each door opening or any section where baseboard will not be installed.
Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?
Yes. Use the Imperial/Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system.
