Wall Square Footage Calculator
Calculate wall area for a single wall, a room perimeter, or multiple equal walls.
Enter one opening deduction for doors, windows, built-ins, or areas that will not receive the wall finish.
Results
This calculator measures wall surface area for finish planning. It does not estimate material cost, labor, framing, drywall, or paint coverage.
How to use this calculator
- 01Choose single wall, room walls, or multiple equal walls.
- 02Enter the wall dimensions in the active unit system.
- 03Add one total opening deduction for doors, windows, built-ins, or uncovered areas.
- 04Use net wall area as the main result for wall-finish material planning.
Use this page before estimating wallpaper or checking wall panel layouts with the Wainscoting Calculator. For generic floor, room, triangle, or circle area, use the Square Footage Calculator.
Understanding the math
Wall square footage is wall surface area. The calculator finds gross wall area first, then subtracts the opening deduction to get net wall area.
single_wall = wall_width x wall_height room_walls = 2 x (room_length + room_width) x wall_height multiple_walls = wall_width x wall_height x wall_count net_wall_area = gross_wall_area - opening_deduction square_meters = square_feet x 0.09290304 square_yards = square_feet / 9
Metric mode uses meters and m². Imperial mode uses feet, inches, and square feet.
Wall area reference table
Use these active-unit examples as a quick check for common wall sizes, room wall area, and opening deductions.
| Example | Result | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft x 8 ft wall | 80 sq ft | Before openings |
| 12 ft x 8 ft wall | 96 sq ft | Before openings |
| 10 ft x 12 ft room, 8 ft walls | 352 sq ft | 2 x (10 + 12) x 8 |
| 3 ft x 7 ft door | subtract 21 sq ft | Opening deduction |
Frequently asked questions
How to calculate square footage of a wall?
Multiply wall width by wall height, then subtract doors, windows, or other openings if needed.
How many square feet is a 10x10 wall?
A 10 ft by 10 ft wall is 100 sq ft before deductions.
How do I subtract doors and windows from wall square footage?
Calculate the wall area first, then subtract the total area of doors, windows, and other openings.
How to calculate exterior wall square footage?
Use wall width x wall height for each exterior wall, add the walls together, then subtract openings if needed.
Can I use this calculator with metric measurements?
Yes. Use the Imperial/Metric toggle. Inputs, results, reference values, and examples follow the active unit system.
