Siding Calculator

Estimate siding square footage, siding squares, panels, and waste for exterior walls. Use wall dimensions, total wall area, or a simple gable wall. Subtract openings for windows and doors, then add waste for cutting and layout. Add panel coverage and price per square foot when you want piece counts and cost.

Mode

Wall dimensions handles repeated same-size walls. Total wall area is for a measured whole-house takeoff. Gable wall uses simple triangle area.

Siding estimates depend on wall layout, lap/exposure, trim details, and supplier packaging. Use the result as a material takeoff starting point, then confirm panel coverage, carton size, and waste with your supplier or installer.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose a mode: wall dimensions, total wall area, or gable wall.
  2. 02Enter the wall size or total area. For repeated walls, use the number of same-size walls field.
  3. 03Enter the total openings area for windows, doors, and other areas that will not receive siding.
  4. 04Add a waste percentage. Ten percent is a common starting point for straight walls; use more for complex layouts.
  5. 05Add coverage per panel and price per square foot if you want piece count and cost estimates.

Understanding the math

Siding takeoff starts with wall area. For a rectangle wall, multiply width by height, then multiply by the number of matching walls. For a gable wall, use base width times gable height divided by 2. Subtract openings, add waste, then divide by 100 to convert square feet into siding squares. If you enter coverage per panel or piece, the calculator divides the order area by that coverage and rounds up.

Gross area = wall width × wall height × wall count
Gable area = base width × gable height / 2
Net siding area = gross area - openings
Order area = net area × (1 + waste / 100)
Siding squares = order area / 100
Panels or pieces = order area / coverage per piece

For four 40 ft × 9 ft walls with 150 sq ft of openings and 10 percent waste: gross area is 40 × 9 × 4 = 1,440 sq ft. Net siding area is 1,440 - 150 = 1,290 sq ft. Order area is 1,290 × 1.10 = 1,419 sq ft. That equals 14.19 siding squares, so you would round up to 15 squares when ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate how much siding I need?

Measure each wall, multiply width by height, and add the wall areas together. Subtract the total area of windows, doors, and other openings. Add waste for cuts and layout, usually 10 percent for simple walls. Divide the final order area by 100 to convert square feet into siding squares.

How to calculate siding square footage?

Siding square footage is the total wall area that needs siding. For each rectangle wall, multiply width by height. For a gable wall, multiply base width by gable height and divide by 2. Add the wall areas together, then subtract openings for windows and doors.

How to calculate siding squares?

A siding square equals 100 square feet. After you calculate the waste-adjusted siding area, divide that number by 100. For example, 1,419 square feet of order area equals 14.19 siding squares. Since siding is usually ordered in full squares or full cartons, round up when buying material.

How much is 1 square of siding?

One square of siding covers 100 square feet. In metric, that is about 9.29 square meters. This is an ordering unit, not the same thing as one square foot. If a wall needs 1,000 square feet of siding, that equals 10 siding squares before waste.
