Vinyl Siding Calculator

Use this vinyl siding calculator to estimate siding area, squares, boxes, panels, and optional material or labor cost. Enter wall dimensions or total wall area, subtract openings, choose a waste factor, and adjust box coverage to match the vinyl siding product you plan to buy.

Wall dimensions handles repeated same-size walls. Total wall area is for a measured whole-house takeoff. Gable wall uses simple triangle area.

Vinyl siding estimates depend on wall layout, product coverage, lap exposure, and supplier packaging. Use this as a material takeoff starting point, then confirm box coverage and waste with your supplier or installer.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01Choose wall dimensions, total wall area, or gable wall mode.
  2. 02Enter the wall size or total siding area, then enter openings for windows and doors.
  3. 03Set a waste percentage. Ten percent is a common starting point for simple vinyl siding projects.
  4. 04Enter coverage per box and panels per box from the vinyl siding product label.
  5. 05Add price per box or labor cost per area if you want cost estimates.

Understanding the math

Vinyl siding takeoff starts with wall area. The calculator subtracts openings, adds waste, converts the order area into siding squares, then divides by box coverage. Panel count comes from boxes to buy times panels per box. Material cost uses price per box. Labor cost uses the order area with waste.

Gross area = wall width x wall height x wall count
Gable area = gable base x gable height / 2
Net area = max(gross area - openings, 0)
Order area = net area x (1 + waste / 100)
Siding squares = order area / 100
Boxes to buy = order area / coverage per box
Panels to buy = boxes to buy x panels per box

For four 40 ft x 9 ft walls with 150 sq ft of openings and 10 percent waste: gross area is 1,440 sq ft. Net area is 1,290 sq ft. Order area is 1,419 sq ft, or 14.19 siding squares. With 200 sq ft per box and 24 panels per box, that rounds up to 8 boxes and 192 panels.

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate vinyl siding?

Measure each wall, multiply width by height, and add the wall areas together. Add gable areas separately using base times height divided by 2. Subtract windows, doors, and other openings. Add waste, usually around 10 percent for simple walls, then divide by 100 for siding squares or by the box coverage for boxes.

How many square feet are in a box of vinyl siding?

Many vinyl siding boxes cover about 200 square feet, or 2 siding squares, but box coverage varies by product. Use the coverage printed on the box or product spec sheet for the final estimate.

How many squares of vinyl siding do I need?

A siding square is 100 square feet. After you calculate wall area, subtract openings and add waste. Divide the final order area by 100 to get exact siding squares, then round up when ordering material.

How much vinyl siding do I need for a 1,000 sq ft house?

A 1,000 sq ft house does not automatically need 1,000 sq ft of siding. Use exterior wall area, not floor area. As a rough check, 1,000 sq ft of order area equals 10 siding squares or about 5 boxes if each box covers 200 sq ft.

How much siding do I need for a 1,500 sq ft house?

Use the exterior wall area, not the interior floor area. If the measured order area is 1,500 sq ft after openings and waste, that equals 15 siding squares or about 8 boxes at 200 sq ft per box.

Should you subtract windows and doors when measuring vinyl siding?

Yes. Subtract the area of windows, doors, garage doors, and other openings that will not receive siding. Keep waste in the estimate because cut pieces and layout losses still matter.
